Looking for a Nest... XXXX. V, OO. ( Two blogs...Seperate...)Photos moved. Move one blog

Atlanta, Georgia

Al and I (with my 'growing belly') arrived at Sandy and Edie's two story house, in a peaceful suburb     of Atlanta.  There was a small 'Forest' behind the fence, where deer were coming to have a drink and  look at us with curiosity...The small lovely home had two stories: Al and I were  given the room, next      our Hosts two adapted boys: Seven years old Bobby and five years old Gery...The kids were fascinated with the  "Baby in 'Aunt Shira's Tummy." I would invite the boys to touch my belly, whenever the baby was moving around and the wonderment in their eyes, would fill my heart with Joy!

On New Year's Day, our hosts invited their group of friends for a Sunday Brunch; to introduce us... Everyone was extremely warm and friendly, welcoming us to their beautiful city, with typical Southern Hospitality:X "Welcome to Atlanta Y'all, make sure to come and visit us at our home, you hear"! X I met Carol at "Hadasa", the Jewish women organization, which Sandy took me, in spite of my protests, that       I didn't care for 'segregation' ("Women only") I was introduced to Dana, another pregnant woman, who had a one year old daughter and was in her fourth month of a second (Unplanned) pregnancy...  The two  of us became instant friends! Al and I met with my friend Joel, the High school principal I knew in N.Y, whos Israeli wife Sara, was pregnant as well... We also met two other 'Israeli/American couples like us... Our social life was blooming and flourishing! Three weeks after staying at Sandy and Eddy's house, we moved to a small apartment near by... Sandy and I became very close and were running around shopping for whatever a young couple, with a small baby may need...

In those days, parents did not know the sex of their baby, before Birth..  Clara, my mother- in law; who predicted that "It will be a Girl", was right! Al and I became parents to a baby girl, whom we named 'Karen, Clara Deitsch'. Like many new mothers, I suffered from 'Postpartum Depression', many women may go through after giving birth...I Couldn't understand what was 'Wrong with me"and    was very unhappy (rather depressed)  Why? After all Al and I finally 'settled down' in this great city, which seemed to be perfect for of us! We had a healthy and adorable baby, with whom we were 'Madly in Love, making many new friends! However, in-spite of my "Sunny Personality" I felt depressed...I blamed it on my 'C section Operation' and the fact, my mother was not by my side, during such an important and challenging event in my life...My behavior seemed strange, to put it very mildly! I was waking up in panic at the middle of the night, run to the baby's room and sit by her crib, making sure she was breathing and had an irrational fear, that if I go back to sleep, my baby may stop breathing... During these dark hours,     I planned to write a book about "Motherhood", which was treated in the Western World as 'Holey Cow' was, in India... No one ever dared to complain or say anything negative about it!

X " Never before did I realize, how Difficult it was to be a Mother! I always believed it was 'Wonderful!       I told my new friends and was surprised, when they agreed and began to complain, thanking me for giving them an opportunity to 'Vent Out'  (Two new English wards...) We shared how exhausted we all were, after 'breast feeding' or 'Warming bottles' at the middle of the night, while holding a shirking baby  in one arm... During the day, we told each other how 'Sleep Deprived', all of us were... We shared the  fears and sens of helplessness, when our baby was screaming and wouldn't calm down! The frequent   calls and visits to the Pediatrician; with real or 'Imagined' problems... These mothers confessed  to me     it was the First Time, they 'dared' talk or complain, about being a mother and how relived they were   after doing so... My new friends, encouraged me to go on, with my idea of writing a book about it and      I gave them my promise to do so; when and if I could find a few moments for myself...X"We should warn and prepare New Mothers about it, so they wouldn't think that something was wrong with Them !"

Since Steve, Al's younger brother, was born when Al was eleven, he was more at ease with our baby  then I was... ( The youngest in my family) He helped (Rather teaching me) how to give Karen a bath changed her diapers, prepared her formula and helped me feeding her, until I completely recovered from my C-Section surgery and gained my strength back.. One of the reasons, I didn't write the book about the 'Difficulties of Motherhood'; was my fear, that when Karen grows up and reads it; she may think I was a 'Terrible Mother'... However, the main reason for not writing, was that after a month I fell 'madly in love' with our baby and the 'Fears' Vanished!...  When Karen was about three months old, my mother came from Israel to Atlanta and stayed at our urging, for four months... Al's father, his brothers, uncle Jack and aunt Roslyn, Clara's sister; came to see and welcome the new arrival to the Deitsch family... The first baby girl (After Lewis and Nancy's two boys) who we named "Karen, Clara Deitsch!"

When Karen turned six months, I started to teach at the local Hebrew High School, where I worked four hours each Sunday... I chose to work a few hours only, because I didn't want my baby to be without her mother for too long. According to my mom, new mothers, should not be separated from their babies at  all! "Because babies need to be physically close to their moms, at least until they start going to Nursery School!"  However, these few hours once a week, away from the roll of being a Mother, helped me keep  in touch with the world I lived in before... I was very much in love with my baby and her dad, delighted  with my new roll in my life, in spite of my the lack of sleep and the 'Starvation die', in order to get ride    of the extra pound, I gain during pregnancy.. At one point I organized a group of young mothers and their babies, which met twice a week at each other's home... ( Way before "Mommy and Me"...) On weekends Al and I, would take rides with our baby, through Atlanta's neighborhoods...We enjoyed the sight of the Dogwood Trees, blooming in the spring, painting the city pink, with their blossom... The two of us were trying to make up our minds, in which neighborhood we should buy our first house... Although we were concerned about the price, we knew it will all work out. and it did! When Al's father and uncle Jack told us they would help with the perches of our first home...

"We are a
happy family!"
Blossoming dogwoods in the Spring Mommy and me

During one of these rides, Karen, who was about ten months old, was sitting on my lap (Car seats for babies were not required yet...) I was pointing and naming whatever we passed: X"Look at this big House Karen! These are trees covered with pink flowers!"X Our baby was looking out the window, mumbling her incoherent 'Baby sounds':"Hou...Ca...Wa...Pit...Tee". Al smiled: X"She is trying to repeat what you are saying! XHe said: "House', 'Car,' and 'Pretty Trees!" He said... "How can you tell?!" I said astonished... "Babies grow up at one point!"Al  was x laughing, at my expression of wonder and amazement! "Don't forget I was already eleven when my bother Steven was born"...  Life could not have been better! Even though Al was began to complain that our apartment was too small. We truly enjoyed this beautiful city and the new friends we made, looking forward for the day we buy our first house: X"With a small garden, sand box and a swing"... The two of us didn't think, or even imagined, that a big 'Recession' is about to come and crash our dreams! When it did, the first to be affected were Restaurants and Hotels, like the one Al was working in... Several of our new friends were losing their business and two couples, had to sell their home The hotel which Al worked in, had to close down and my poor husband, was in a state of panic! I stayed  calm... X"No big deal Al! You will have to look for a job in another state,"I am sure you will even find  a better place then this 'Small Hotel'!  After all, you are used to Big Hotel Chains... It may be happening for the best and could be a blessing in disguise!"X I said."But we love it here!" Al protested. "Atlanta is  a great place to live in! The weather is perfect and we made so many new friends! I hate the thought of starting all over again!"X"We must "Go with the Flow, darling!"x I said and these ward would become the 'Mantra' I would be be using again and again, thorough out our life together...

My poor Al was running around looking for employment; pacing back and fourth in the small apartment  I felt so sorry for him... One evening, our neighbors offered to 'Baby Sit' for Karen, so the two of us could use our concert tickets', for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra... We still had several tickets left form the ' 'season tickets' which we bought in better times... During the break, I glanced at my poor husband's sad gloomy expression and said cheerfully: X"Don't you think that since we are going to be in Paris, we might as well go to London as well?..."I asked (as if it was true)... Al didn't miss a beat:X "Of course! And Rome as well! I would like to start exposing Karen to travel at an early age!" We were standing,'weaving our dreams' and for a while, forgetting how deeply concerned we were, about the next steps we should take   in order to move on... How could we know, that four years later, Al would be established in a successful business of his own and at one point, our small family of three, would fly to Paris and continue to London and Italy and stay at the Villa d'Este; A Palace, which was converted to one of the most exclusive hotels  in Europe, located on the shores of the magnificent Lake Como...It seemed as if my"Inner Creator", had the ability to Manifest most of my 'dreams' and was behind the "Voice" which was weaving them, on the night we stood on the balcony of the Concert Hall in Atlanta. It was the same old gift of "Creation through the Spoken Wards", which I first discovered, when I was fifteen...The same "Inner Voice"which helped me 'Materialize' our High School trip to Cyprus... (From Public School to High School.)

Two weeks after the concert, Al received a great Job offer, as the Assistant Manage, in a large hotel      of  a well known Chain... This hotel was known for it's important Golf Tournaments, which drew people from the U.S, as well as other countries... The new hotel was located in Augusta Georgia...We knew very little bout this city nor did we know, anyone who lived there... Al was very upset about losing the friends we made in Atlanta, but I was able to calm him down and was delighted and relieved, when he began to  be excited... I loved my husband so much, I would move with him to the end of the world, just to see him happy! A few days later, Al traveled to Augusta Georgia, to meet the president and the manger of the New Hotel... He phoned me full of enthusiasm... X"The people he met so far were very pleasant, the hotel was impressive and he found a 'Spacious Apartment' for us! Would I trust him to get it without seeing it first?"  I always trusted Al's taste and told him to go ahead... We celebrated Karen's first birthday, with the friends we made in Atlanta and began to get ready for our big move.... Karen's vocabulary was growing and I was keeping a written list of her progress... She started with One-syllable words: Dog, Cat, Duck, Star,  Kiss Hug and progressed to Two-syllables: 'Ima' ( Mom in Hebrew) Da-lin ("Darling" for Al) and a few other new short words, Al and I were using... It was so 'beyond exiting', to hear our baby talks!

We were sad to part from the good friends, we made in Atlanta who promised to visit us...They came to say good- by, hugging us with teary eyes and were saying in their 'Cute' Southern Ascents; "XY'all come back to see us, ya hear?!" After sending our furniture and other household items ahead, got with our baby into the car  and were on our way,to settle down in a city we have never heard before: Augusta, Georgia!

How can one be politically correct, when it comes to describe the new city we came to live in?  To      put it mildly: It was a culture shock!... After moving six times (three times in L.A) I often watch the  'Silent Videos' we took during those days... They are showing the many churches in Augusta, as well as some of the"Spiritual Massages" on billboards along the free ways... One of them was saying: X"With the blood of Jesus, you will wash your sins!"... Our black maid Essie, was looking very scared, when Al and   I smiled and treated her as our equal... After awhile she got used to us and fell in love with Karen...Essie was a bit shocked, to hear how Karen, who was only one and a half years old, was singing the ABC song and saying: "Hi Essie!", before running to welcome her with hugs and kisses... Many years later, after watching the movie XGone with the Wind, Karen would tell her friends, that she too was born in the  South and had a 'Mammy', just like Scarlett O'Hara did  ...

                                                                                   .

This city, was very different from Atlanta... It was much smaller, with a few 'Chain Restaurants': The Waffle House, Mellow Mushroom and several 'Mom and Pop's' Eateries'... The only fine restaurant was located at the hotel, where Always working... Once, when I was driving alone with Karen, I saw a line of prisoners, chained to one another, sweating heavily in the hot sun...These  miserable people, walked with two guards holding guns, just a few feet away from my car, which was unlocked! For a minute I was frozen with fear... X"What if one of them, runs toward us and grabs my baby?" I have never felt such terror before Another time, I was shopping at the supermarket with Karen sitting in the cart, smiling and waving...  I was listening to the woman, standing in front of me, who holding the hand an adorable little boy, whom she was constantly yelling at and reprimanding an was telling her friend: X"I have to beat up this boy every night, until I get him to go to sleep!"...' What am I doing here'? I found myself wondering but couldn't stay silent: I walked to the child, stroked his head and said to the mother; "What a beautiful boy you have. he is such a Sweetheart!"  The woman smiled back and kissed her little boy... In spite of  the many friends we made in Augusta, I began to wonder, how much longer I'll be able to stay in this city'... Al on the other hand, was enjoying his work, as well as the people he worked with.

About seven months after we came to Augusta, Al was sitting at a meeting, when one of his co-workers began to tell 'Antisemitic' Jokes, which the others seemed to enjoy... Evidently people didn't realize Al is Jewish, since his last name "Deitsch", is German... This was the last straw, which made us realize that in spite of the nice group of friends, which we cultivated, Augusta was not for us..We came to the conclusion  that our next move, would be to Florida... Al's uncle Jack, his father's brother, lived in Miami Beach with second wife Natalie... Aunt Roslyn, Al's mother's sister was Al's favorite aunt; She now lived with her husband Uncle Murray, near by. Uncle Joe, (whose late wife was aunt Rose, was Al's fathers' sister... )was was now married to Yeta, his new wife, living in a close proximity, to the rest of the "clan"... Now, that we had a child, we I were delighted to be next to this close and loving relatives, who were just as glad, to have a young couple and a sweet baby (Karen) to be with...

_________________________________________________________________________________________ 2 up

We joined the local Jewish temple, made new friends and before long, I created a similar "Mommy     and Me" group as I did in Atlanta... At one point, I suggested to get together with our husbands for dinner parties at each other's home... We decided that the hosting couple, would picks up a 'letter' from  the alphabet and cook a 'Surprise Dinner', from the country which it's name begins with this letter... and after tasting the food, the gusts would try to guess, which country it was originated in... Al and I hosted the first dinner, starting with the letter A... We chose to cook an 'Arabic Meal'...One of the dishes, from my  cookbook; 'Meals from Around the World', sugested "Stuffed Pigeons"... I looked for the smallest Cornish Hens I could find at the supermarket and stuffed the "Pigeons" with rice, fried onions, olives, raisins, pine nuts and exotic oriental spices, like Cardamon, Cayenne paper and a dash of Cinnamon... When our gusts refused to eat the "Poor Pigeons", I had to 'Confess my crime' and was rewarded by fits of laughter and eager eaters, who enjoyed the unfamiliar spicy dish... All throughout dinner, there was a loud conversation as well as 'light arguments' and a joyous laughter! Everyone fell in love with Al's sense of humor, after he described, how he 'Almost died from fear', during the Yom Kippur War, in Israel... (In the Land of Milk and Honey) From that day on, we started to have a great social life...The mothers and kids had lot's of fun when we met twice a week at a different house... We also celebrated together birthdays and the Jewish holidays, as well as  having Play Dates for the kids...

In spite of the good time and lovely friends we made, Al and I missed the life in a big city: The hustle and bustle of taxis and cars, fancy restaurants and crowds walking or sitting at sidewalks cafes...We were missing the concerts of Classical Music, Opera,  Museums, Art Exhibits, Theaters and a choice of Fine Restaurants... Al began to look for a job in hotels in Florida, but was unable to find one. He finally had      to settle for a small, 'privately owned' hotel in Miami Beach, hoping to convince it's owner, to turn it to      a larger and more profitable Hotel... I began to realize that my husband, would never be satisfied with a small business... He was always looking for the Largest, Nicer and more Expensive place to stay or dine in...Growing up in Israel, which was a young country, I had no chance to experience the luxury Al was used to.I began to fear that my husband may never be satisfied, unless the hotel he is going to work in would be the most luxurious one in the city...

Karen's 2nd birthday
in Augusta Georgia
Happy birthday!

Just as in our move from Atlanta to Augusta, we said good-by to the new friends we grew to appreciate and love... A week after Karen's second birthday, we shipped our belongings ahead of us and were getting ready for the nine hours drive to Florida Aunt Roslyn found a lovely town house for us... Al who always admired and trusted her taste, approved the photos she sent and like in our previous drive from Atlanta to Augusta, we drove to our new home in Florida! This time, Karen was able to talk in  English and in Hebrew... The three of us were having a great time! Laughing and singing: "Old Mac Donald Had a Farm", "If you are Happy and you know it clap your hands" and other songs Karen  knew... We would often stop to stretch our legs, dine at one of the many restaurants along  the freeway and were looking forward for the next chapter in our life!

Moving again

Aunt Roslyn made an intensive research, before she found "A perfect apartment!" in a community of young families like us: Kendell in Florida... There was a small lake next to the complex, surrounded by grassy area and families of ducks, swimming and roaming around, which  delighted Karen and the other kids who enjoyed feeding them... Unlike Atlanta and Augusta, where we had several groups of friends   we now made friends with two other couples only. We were very busy with our older relatives, who longed for our company, especially that of Karen...  Al and I did our best, to see them as often as we  could; dividing between us, the celebration of the Jewish holidays, as well as Labor Day, July 4th and Thanks Givings... Al and I made sure to take out his father, uncles and aunts to fine restaurants, when    their birthdays and anniversaries arrived... It was all very different, from the way we celebrated  our birthdays in Israel; my small country of birth...

Ducks in the pond Al at his dad's birthday Aunt Roselyn
and Dad
 Uncle Murray's Birthday Miami Beach

Al was not happy in the hotel he worked... He complained it was much smaller then those he worked    in Puerto Rico and Georgia...X"The hotel hasn't been refurbished, for who knows how long and smelled badly!" He complained and couldn't understand, why the owner of the hotel was annoyed at him after Al advise to have a "Total Remodeling" of his hotel, in order to "Attract better kind of clients"... The amused owner said it is an "Excellent Advice and he was all for it; especially if Al would Pay for the renovation    I was beginning to realize that my husband's unhappiness with his work places, seem to be a repeating pattern... "What was going on?" I wondered, "Is Al still the pampered child who was used to get what  ever he wanted, without putting too much efforts into it? "Would there ever be the kind of work, he may be satisfied with? Are we going to keep on moving each year, until he finally finds what he really likes? "

It was not only the hotel which bothered Al... He was complaining about his eighty years old Uncle Jack and his second wife Natalie, who were constantly asking him to come over and take them shopping at the near by Supermarket... It was driving Al crazy, to wait after his long day at work, while Aunt Neatly was squeezing each and every fruit and vegetable, to make sure it was fresh, while Uncle Jack, was compering the prices of the many brands of 'Prune Juice' ("Good for Constipation!") In order see which one was the cheapest... "He has millions of dollars and no children!" X Al complained to me "Why doesn't he get a driver to take them around, instead of asking me to do it, after my long day at X work, when all I want     is to go  home and be with my family!"  I was beginning to get frustrated with Al's constant complaints even though, this time I was unable to blame him...

I made peace with the fact that my 'American husband', who was raised in the 'lap of luxury', is rather 'Spoiled' and has big"Dreams and Ambitions"...  Realizing that 'My Man', may never be happy, unless     he has his Own Business, which he planed to turn in to a"Franchise"! (A new word I never heard before)    I began to teach at the Hebrew day school, where Karen was going to the Toddlers Program. When the   two hours were over, I would send two girls, from the fourth grade I was teaching, to bring my Toddler     to our Class Room... The girls would fuss over Karen, as girls this age usually do, with younger kids (especially if this one is the 'Teacher's Daughter')... The nine years old kids in my class, would give her   crayons and my two and a half years old 'Mini Student', was sitting on the chair, barely reaching the top of the desk and her feet dangling in the air and was scribbling and watching her mother teach, covering  the paper in front of her with different colors and never interrupted me, not even once...

One evening, when Al and I came back from a dinner with friends, Karen's baby sitter, told us that "Uncle  Sam" called from New Jersey... Uncle Sam was Al's mother's brother, who took over his father's small 'Carpentry Shop' and turned it into a medium size Furniture Company... When Al called him back Sam told him that he heard of a small furniture company in Los Angeles (which is owned by "Two old Jewish German Refugees), which was for sail... If Al is interested, they could buy the company and be able to combine the West Coast operation in California, with Uncle Sam's business in New Jersey! They  would also sell furniture in Europe and their Italian partners furniture, would be sold in the  U.S... Uncle Sam suggested that Al flys to California as soon as possible, in order to negotiate of 'Merging the two  company's... I asked Al when he was leaving and he answered that he doesn't realy want to move to Los Angeles, because California is known to have Earthquakes ...

It was the first time in our marriage that I realy lost my temper... I told him (rather loud) that I was    tired of his 'Consent Complaints' and was beginning to wounder if anything would be Good Enough       for him..."Listen Al, you can always say No, but first you must find out, if you are not missing the most important opportunity of your life!" Two days later Al flew to L.A and 'fell in love' with the Business      Xas well as with  the city... Uncle Jack gave him an advance, which would later be deducted from the Inheritance he intended to leave his six nephews and nieces... For the third time we were getting ready     to move after one year: This time  L.A, on to the West Coast of California!

3rd birthday

3rd birthday
at home

Before Al left, we celebrated Karen's third birthday, with the family and    new friends we made in Florida and were getting ready for our move  to Los Angels... Al drove his car by himself, since such such a long trip, would be way X to difficult, for our three years old Karen... I stayed behind to handle shipping our possessions to L.A, with the help of my Father in Law; Al's dad... Karen's kindergarten teacher, was telling me how our three years old daughter, was running around the school, singing the song"California here I come!"  Three weeks, after Al found the right apartment for his small family, Karen and I boarded a plane and flew to west, to Los Angele (the city of Angels) to join our "Darling"(as we bouth called Al) knowing that California would be our final destination...

A Visit to Israel

I haven't seen my parents for quiet a while... A week before Al and I started to get ready for our trip     to Israel, he asked me which hotel in Netanya (where my parents lived) is the nicest, so he could make reservations... "Are you kidding?!" I said, "My parents will be very hurt! In Israel people don't go to hotels, when they have a family to stay with! We are going to stay be them, in their house!"A year after  our wedding, my parents realized that they have an empty nest and decided to accomplish an old dream, of living within a short walk from the Mediterranean Sea... They wanted to have their own home again (no more Condos and noisy neighbors...) For a long time, they were looking for small house with some land, in which they could plant fruit trees and grow some vegetables. Eventually they found a  small, two bed rooms house in Netanya... It had a few grown trees of oranges and apples and enough room for a small vegetable garden.  My parents, who planed to add an additional bedroom to the tiny house, realize, they used most of their savings, in order to buy the three plain tickets, in order to fly to the U.S for my wedding...So the small house remained as it was - Small, which was enough for the two of them... They placed in the living room a  sofa, which could turn into a large beds, in case they had sleepover guests, planted a small vegetable garden, walked to the beach and were very happy in their quiet and peaceful little home, which was just a walking distance, from the Mediterranean sea...

Pilgrims kissing the
Holy Land's ground

Al and I landed at Lod Airport, after the exhausting eleven hours flight... There were people from all nationalities roaming around, among them was a group of Arabs, wearing their traditional white robes and headdress. Al turned to me with alarm; "Look Shira" He whispered. "There are Arabs here!" He seemed to be scared which made me laugh... "Don't worry darling, these Arabs are Israeli citizens! They have nothing to do with our enemies... Israel has always been and is still their home they are  Israeli citizans, they Okay!"

Israeli Arabs

Al had to pick up our heavy suitcases, from the conveyor belt and was complaining about the lack of porters and his acing back, finally piling the luggage in  to three carts, which we found nearby and we started to push the heavy load, towards the car rental agency... Once outside, we saw a group of pilgrims, getting on their knees and kissing the ground of the "Holy Land", where Jesus was born. ..  We received our car and transferred the luggage into it, starting to drive north, to my parents house in Netanya which was about an hour and a half away...

After the hugs, kisses, tears and laughter and watching with a smile my excited parents, stroking my belly (which contained their future grandchild...) we finaly set on the sofa, which was covered with a few colorful, soft and inviting pillows and were sipping Turkish coffee, enjoying the fresh and dry fruit, my mom brought in. (No cakes in a vegetarian house...) As we were talking and catching up, Al was looking around at the modest room, which was so different, from his parents large and well decorated home... He admired the tasteful collection of knickknacks and art work, my parents accumulated throughout the years, especially the antique grandfather clock, which chimed the same melody as the Big Ben in London, every fifteen minutes, as well as the entire tune, on th hour... At one point, after Al excused himself to wash his hands, he came back and whispered in my ear: X"Where is the rest of the house? I couldn't find the guest bathroom or our bedroom..." "There is none..." I told him laughing, X"My parents bought this house a few years after Rami and I moved out, it was big enough for the two of them; One living room, one bedroom and this one bathroom -What you see is what you get Albie! This is Israel, not the United States...

Red figs
Green figs

We were sitting with my parents, talking and catching up,when the Jet leg 'kicked in', even though it was only early afternoon. My mom and Dad replaced the sofas' covers with fresh sheets, which were drying on the line at the back yard... (No dryers in Israel during those days...) After they gave us pillows and blankets, Al and I closed the shutters and within minutes fell into a very deep sleep. We woke, around three in the in morning, ravenous... Before our trip I wrote my mother and asked her to get fresh figs for Al, who  never tasted one before... In the small 'Fridge' of my Vegetarian parents, we found steamed vegetables, a large fresh vegetables salad, eggplants salad, hummus (garbanzo beans) baked sweet potatoes and two bowls   of fresh figs... Al, the 'Meat Eater', was dreaming of a salami or corn beef sandwich, but the figs were       a pleasant surprise, if not exactly a substitute for cold cuts... The two of us set in  the reclining chairs on    the porch, eating figs and looking at the starry sky; enjoying the mild chill of the approaching Autumn  How nice it was to be on the other side of the world!  We were talking and making plans how how to spend our time in the following days and finally went back to sleep...

Being health conscious; my parents believed that people should sleep on a Hard Surface, without  springs which "Damage the spine!" Years before, my father removed the springs from the beds and     sofas and replaced them with flat hardwood boards, underneath the thin mattresses... My poor Al was unable    to sleep... He was moaning and groaning, complaining he was very uncomfortable and his back was killing him... I responded with lack of sympathy; telling him he is very spoiled, which reminded me of the children's story by Hans Christian Andersen, about "The Princess and the Pea"... When we finally fell asleep, the Grandfather Clock, woke us up every fifteen minutes, with an additional part of the Big Ben's melody and the full melody on the hour... The next morning Al complained about terrible stomach cramps! Evidently, the result of the figs he was not used to, which he enjoyed so much the night before    As the day progressed, we found out that besides his stomach ace, Al was running a high fever... My parents started to prepare all kinds of Natural Remedies: "Carrot and Green Juice with Ginger" (which made Al gag after taking the first sip...)  They also put cold compress on his forehead, to reduce the  fever... My poor spoiled American husband, was whispering to me that all he realy wants, is to be back  the United States! In spite of the concern and sympathy for him, my parents and I couldn't stop laughing hysterically, at my "Delicate America husband", who was moaning and groaning to make us laugh...

The doctor, my parents finally summoned to the house, assured Al that he had nothing to worry about! He said that most of the 'Stool specimens' in his lab, belong to tourists, who are not used to the water and fruit in Israel... The good doctor was able to calm Al down, after giving him some pills, promising he would get better within a few days! Even after Al's temperature dropped, he was still complaining. "My stomach hurts, the drinking water in Israel has a strange aftertaste, the food is uneatable and the Toilet Paper is more like Sand Paper!" Caused my parents and me to laugh hysterically... I began to realize that my handsome American husband, was not very Brave, rather spoiled, as well as being a 'Complainer' (to put it mildly...) This did not make me love him any less, on the contrary... After all, haven't I read in the romantic literature, that real True Love is not to love your partner 'because of', but 'in spite of...  On the third day, I asked my parents not to be insulted, if Al and I move to a nearby hotel... They said they could understand what a culture shock, Al must be going through, since he grew up in the 'Lap of Luxury' and  finds himself in their tiny house, with only One bath-room, especially when he is sick! They suggested that before we leave for the hotel , Al should try one more Natural "Sure-Cure", which they used on my brother and me, when we were sick... They offered to wrap his entire body with a sheet, soaked in cold herbal water and then, cover him with several heavy blankets, so his body would Sweat and Release all Toxins, within a few hours! When I translated what they said, Al looked into my eyes pleading: "Please Shira, don't let them come near me, with wet sheets! All I need now, is to get Pneumonia and die in the Holy Land, before seeing our baby!"

The hotel we moved to helped, as well as the doctor's medicine... Within three days, Al was up and around, ready to see the rest of the country! My friends invited us to their homes and Al suggested we reciprocate by taking them to a well known, popular restaurant/night club in Jaffa... Now, that  my American husband felt better, his charming personality and sense of humor returned and like always       he was conquering everyone's  heart... When he fully recovered  the two of us drove our rental car to Jerusalem, staying for a few days in the King David Hotel , which used to be the previous British Headquarters and was bombed during the War of Independence... The two of us walked all over this  charming biblical city and met Ellie and Yedida's large family, who welcomed us, as if we were their   long lost relatives! Abraham Bekowitz, my old school friend, who became an Archeologist, took us        to see several Archeological digs and some of the old 'biblical places' in Jerusalem, which their small duplicates, my grandfather carved out of "Jerusalem Stones" and gave us several of them , as our    wedding gift... .XXX Buildings.....

The day before the holiday of Yom Kippur, "The Day of Atonement", we  left Jerusalem, driving our rented car back to Netanya. Al was the driver and I acted as the navigator, with the map spread across my growing belly... "Don't make a mistake and get us over the border, Shira!" Al said. "After all, Israel is bordering with Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon; countries which don't particularly likes the Jewish People!" I started to laugh, "Don't be crazy Al, they are NOT that close!" After a while Al said:X"By the way, I hope the Arabs will not choose to attack Israel on Yom Kippur!" "Oh Al, I am  beginning to realize  that you are realy Paranoid!"x I was laughing, X"The borders are very far and besides, why would they attack us on our Holiest day of the year?" X"That's why!" Al said "You told me that almost everyone here is in the synagogues on Yom Kippur, what a perfect time to attack and catch the Israelis off guard... Can't you see that?" He said "No, I can't!" I answered, X"Just relax Al, the Israelis are never off guard and the border is far away!  Suddenly, I spotted a  tank, standing by the right side of the road...

The tank and I
"Border ahead"
"Stop the car Al!" I yelled. He stopped and looked at me with alarm. "I want to take a photo, so one day our child will see how I was as 'big as a tank', when I was pregnant! Don't you think it is funny?  In Israel they say about a pregnant women that "She is as big as a Tank!" "No!!!" Al said, but already opened the door and ran towards the tank... Al went out and after making sure, there were no Arabs hiding behind or inside the tank, snapped the photo and rushed me back in to the car... For a while we were driving in silence. when suddenly we spotted on the right side of the road, a green sign, with white letters in Hebrew, English and Arabic: "Watch Out! Border Ahead!" Al gave me a dark look: "You said the border was far away, didn't you?!" He accused me. I didn't answer and we resumed the drive in silence...

We arrived at my parents house in the evening; just in time for the Yom Kippur dinner, which my mother worked hard to prepare: Vegetable soup with beans and barley, vegetable quiche, red and green lentils, brown rice, baked squash, hummus puree, garlic eggplants in tomato sauce and for desert, baked apples and a fresh fruit salad...  When my Dad noticed how Al was shoving the food around his plate rather then eating it, he said to him with a forgiving smile; X"I am sure you are used to have different kind of food, on the Jewish Holidays, but you are stuck now with us, your new Vegetarian Family!" The next morning we woke up early. I couldn't wait to show Al, how deserted the streets were on Yom Kippur... After we crossed my parents small street, to the main one, we saw to my amazement, buses, cars and trucks; driving fast in all directions! "I thought you said that no vehicles move on Yom Kippur!" Al said     I suddenly noticed a solder, in a full battle gear, talking to a woman who was standing on the third floor balcony of the building next to us; "Something is happening in the South!" The solder was saying... After translating it to Al, he became alarmed: "I wonder what's going on?" He said. Then I heard another solder  telling a man near by, that "Something is going on in the North!" Al became pale, when I told him what he said, said. "Oh my God!" He told me, "The distance between the North and the South, in this country is very small! Let's get the hell out of here!"

At that moment the Air Raid Siren went off...  Older soldiers from the National Guard, began to usher and shove people, from the street to the near by shelters... I was very calm, I guess that besides being fearless, after going through four wars in Israel, I developed some kind of "Immunity to fear"... However  I could understand how frightening this could be, for a person who saw wars only in the Movie Theaters   and began to feel badly for Al... X "Don't worry darling!" X We finished them in six days last time, we will now do even better!"X An older woman with a British accent, who was standing next to us in the crowded shelter, joined in: "Yes, don't be afraid! My late husband and I went through the Blitz in London! God who loves the Jewish people, is always watching over us!" "Reilly?" Al said turning to her, "What do you think the Arabs are saying now, about which side God loves more?" I had to cover my mouth with my hand to suppress my laughter...

After the 'All-Clear ' Siren, we returned to my parents house... They were sitting next to the black and white TV screen (which is usually off during Yom Kippur...) listening to the newscaster, who was saying that Israel has been attacked by Egypt, Syria, and Jordan... When the siren started again, we hurried to the shelter in the back yard... Al was terrified, while my parents and I were calm... After all, we lived through three wars, which Israel won!  I noticed that the 'baby' was jumping around in my belly, much more then usual... Years later I would learn, that babies in utero can feel the mother's emotions and react to her fear of danger... "Relax darling" I told Al. " Israel finished them in six days, during the last war, It would now  take four days only!"... On the second day of the war, Al and I took a walk to the center of Netanya, to  buy an English newspaper... On the front page of the Harold News from London, we saw three big bold black words: "ISRAEL LOSING WAR!"

X"Oh my God!" Al becoming very pale: "Israel losing war! Lets get out of here!" Across the street was     a travel agency and he pulled me towards it. "There are two tickets left on Al Italia to Rome!" The middle age woman in the office told us. X"Lets go right now!" Al said x "We will be in Rome tonight and have  Spaghetti and Meatballs! Please Shira, let's get out of here!" I looked at him with astonishment! "Are you Nuts? My country is at war, my brother, cousins and friends are fighting now, endangering their lives to protect us and all you can think about is going to Rome to have spaghetti and meatballs?!" A moment later the office manager, who was on the phone with Al Italia, told us that all the flights of Al Italia and from Israel were canceled... The war was still raging, when the Newscaster announced that Iraqi forces besides those of Egypt, Syria and Jourdan, were joining in the war against Israel... Two days later, Al as well as my parents, forced me to leave on an American flight, which came to rescue all the trapped American tourists  in Israel... My heart was heavy:"How can I leave now, when Israel is in such danger?   I called Yedida's and Elly's family members, to find out if their sons, who were fighting, were O.K. They said that so far thank  God, they didn't hear any bad news... When I was hugging my parents, before we left for the Air Port, I felt as a Traitor and was praying that the War ends soon with Israel's victory!

Al and I were met at Kennedy Airport, by his older brother Lewis. The family and friends in New Jersey were very worried and happy to see us safe in the US... Three days later, we flew to Puerto Rico, where we met with Eli and Yedida, who were 'sick with worries', about their families and were relived to hear that so far  they were all well...  We were glued to the television set for days, until the war came to an end, with an amazing victory for Israel! All together the war lasted from October 6th to the 25th . It was named "The Yom Kippur War..."

"During the first few days of the war, Egypt and Syria seemed to be winning... However the Israelis were able to push the Syrian forces back... The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) were stationed 40 k.m from Damascus, the capital of Syria.....On October 14, Egypt, which earlier surprised the Israeli forces in the Sinai peninsula, attacked as well, trying to advance deeper into the Sinai desert... Israel defeated the attackers and the Egyptians lost about 250 tanks. After heavy fighting, the Israelis crossed the Suez Canal... They trapped a large Egyptian force on the eastern side of the canal, only 101 kilometers away from Cairo, the capital of Egypt..."

I never met a person who visited Israel and upon hearing I was Israeli, wouldn't say what a fascinating country it was! In the upcoming years, Al embellished the stories about his adventurers in Israel during  the Yom Kippur War; telling his audience, how he predicted the War (which was true) and was adding to the story the Air Raid sirens the sound of falling bombs (which was not true) He describing how he wasn't afraid die in the war, as much as 'dying' from his mother-in-law's vegetarian cooking and the wet sheets his father in law, wanted to wrap him with, to help bring down his fever, when he was close to dying... After showing the photos he took of the group of pilgrims, kissing the ground of the Holy Land, Al said    "I  did the same thing, but the other way round: The moment after the plain landed in N.Y, I got on my knees and kissed the ground of Kennedy Air Port!" He was rewarded with roaring laughter...When asked "Did you learn any Hebrew when you were in Israel?" Al's answer was: Yes!"Milchama, Tankim and Shilshul!" (War, Tanks and Diarrhea!)

Pan am to Atlanta
Eddie and Sandy

Between all the possibilities of places to move to from Puerto Rico, we finally chose Atlanta, in Georgia... The weather seemed perfect: It had mild four seasons, which we missed so much in Puerto Ric... Eddie, Al's close friend from N.J and his wife Sandy  were a part of Al's group of the friends. I first met the two of them when they flew in for our wedding, telling us what a lovely city Atlanta is! They invited us to stay in their two story house, until Al finds a job, in one of the hotels in the city... During the time I lived in NY, I befriended Joel, the principal of the Hebrew high school, where I was teaching. At one point, Joel and his Israeli wife Sara, moved to Atlanta, to ran a Hebrew High school When I called to ask for their opinion about the move, I asked if by any chance, Joel needed a teacher... His answer was:X"Yes! You are Hired!"X  Sara, who had a three years old child and was pregnant with a second, was delighted to have an Israeli friend...  Al found a job at a small hotel in Down Town Atlanta and we were ready to make another move... We said tearful good by to our friends in Puerto Rico and flew to N.Y. where we stayed for a week with Al's family in new Jersey, We then bordered the plain to Atlanta ready to start our new life...  I was in my seventh month of pregnancy...

The First Years .V, . XXX O.K

Al and I were very happy...We were bouth delighted to finally find our 'second half'...But our Joy        was mixed with great Sadness, after we found out that Al's Mother Clara, was diagnosed with "Cancer"      Al was flying to New Jersey twice a month, in order to visit his sick mother... Even though we spoke to       her on the phone, it was not the same as being by her side!  Clare began treatments at the local hospital   in New Jersey... Two days before we celebrated our first Wedding Anniversary, Al's younger brother Steve came to Puerto Rico, together with a "Big Portion"of our 'Wedding Cake' which was kept in a Deep 'Freezer' all this time... At one point Al and I had a long discussion, about having a baby...We were totally happy to be by ourselves, not wishing for 'Anything or Anyone' to "Interfere"... A baby would be a big change and even a bigger Responsibility!x" We told each other. However, we were not getting younger  and realized, that "Getting Pregnant", would make Al's mother very happy and give her something to be looking for and may help her forget her "Health problems... We knew, how glad our families and friends would be by the news; but we still hesitated... It took the two of us a long time to find one another; we were very happy together and feared to spoil our Great Joy...  However, we knew how excited Al's mom would be and felt guilty for 'being Selfish'...  Eventually we let go of our fears that having a baby may spoil our togetherness... However, the more we talked about it; the more we became excited... One day   when Al was talking with his parents in New Jersey, he told his Mom that I wanted to talk to her and handed me the phone...

"How are you doing Mom?" I asked. "Not so good Shira"... My mother-in-law answered with a sad          almost 'Apologetic' ton of voice..."Well, I have something to tell you which would make you feel much better!" I told her..."What is it Shira?" Clara answered in a weak and tired voice..."How would you like    to become a Grandmother again?" I asked..."My God! Such amazing news! How soon?! I know it will    be a baby girl, so you will have a name for me, after I am gone! I also know I will not be here, to hold   her in my arms, but it is so wonderful to know, there will be someone to carry on my name!" she said "Please don't Xtalk this way Mom!" I told her, tears rolling down my cheeks: "You now have a reason      to live for!"... "I don't think I will make it Shira, but just knowing about the baby, makes me feel much better! She said... I had to to wipe off my tears and could see Al doing the same...

On the last week of June Al's father called; asking us to fly to New Jersey Right Away! In the hospital we found Clara, propped up on several pillows...She was a petite woman and lying in the big bed made her look even smaller.. She was very weak, but still had her usual sweet, welcoming smile on her lips...   We were coming to the hospital several times a day; sitting and holding her hand, talking in a low voice and looking at her sweet face... When Clara fell asleep, as she often did (sometime even at the middle of   a sentence) we set patiently, waited for her to wake up and were watching the news on the T.V... Clara was very interested in politics and was following the news about the 'Watergate Scandal'."I hope Nicson would be Impeached!" She said passionately..."This man does not deserve to be a president!" Al and I were holding her hand in turns... At times, when I felt the baby moving, I put Clara's hand on my belly and was rewarded by her cry of Joy and a look of Amazement...

Al's parents lead a 'Fun field life'... Hosting dinner parties, going out to fine restaurants and classical music. concerts...The two of them celebrated holidays, birthdays and anniversaries with their large family and friends; enjoyed Art Exhibits and had 'Season Tickets for Classical music, Theater and the Opera...  Clara was involved with several 'Charities organizations and traveled with her husband and friends to  Europe and the Far East... Now, she no longer talked about their exciting Social Life, but was telling us stories about the time her three sons were small... At one point she asked for a bottle of Champagne to    be brought to her privet room... Still the perfect Hostess she was sitting in her bed, supported by pillows looking like a graceful and Regal Queen... She asked all of us to hold up our champagne glasses and was taking turns talking to each person in the room, wishing us health, Love and happiness... Clara loved to talk about her sons childhood, her two Grand Kids and the unborn baby in my womb...X"I know it would be a girl!"She said  'Let's drink to her life: "Le'chaim!" I knew Clara's was giving her" Final Party and realized that this delicate and refined Lady; was saying her final Goodbye...

Obituary for Al's Mom
4th of July

On the night of July 4th (American Independents Day) my     mother in law Clara Deitsch, past away...She was only sixty    years old... I told Al that his mother's was going to Heaven illuminated and escorted by Fireworks! After the funeral and the seven days of morning, Al and I flew back to Puerto Rico with heavy hearts... Since the beginning of my pregnancy, the  two of us were talking about moving back to the U.S... New Jersey was out of the question, since Al detested the the cold weather! This was the main reason he chose to live in the Caribbeans... Clara's death made us realize how   sad we were, that our baby will never meet her Grandmother. At one point I asked Al: "What do you think about moving to Israel?"  Before the 'Six Days War', Israel was attacked without any provocation by several of it's Arab neighbors:"Egypt, Jordan and Syria as well as Arab countries, which had no borders with Israel:(Algeria, Kuwait, Iraq and Moroco..X)  Tiny Israel won the war against all odds! It was almost like the Biblical story about David and Goliath! Tourists from all over the world, were arriving in droves to see and congratulate this brave and amazing tiny country... The Economy was booming:  New hotels were built in order to accommodate the influx of Admiring Visitors, who came from all over the world    to congratulate the citizens of this Tiny Country...

"How about settling in Israel?"X I asked Al... "Israel?!" He said shocked... "Yes, Israel!  Why not?"          I answered..."It has a mild climate, I have a large loving family and lots of friends; "With your Hotel experience as the 'Food and Beverage Manager' of prestigious hotels, like the Hilton and Sheraton hotels  you would be able to get a great position, in one of the largest hotels in Israel!" X I told him..."But I don't  speak Hebrew!" Al protested, "I told you how I hated Mr Levy, my Hebrew school teacher! I have never been in Israel before! All I know is that Israel is a small country with big problems with Arab countries all around it and I realy I don't like wars!" Al often used his sense of humor to mask his fears... I was always amused, when he was acting as the 'Anti-Hero', but even though he was joking, I could see he was really scared. It was so different from my 'Macho' Israeli friends..."Please Al, don't be ridiculous darling! You have lived for eight years in Puerto Rico, without complaining about it's size! let's admit it: Both of us  had enough of Island Living, especially now, after Mario and Marganet left for Florida...It may be the time for us to make a change: Let's go to Israel for a month; I am sure you are going to be pleasantly surprised!  The climate is warm, yet it has the 'Four Seasons' we missed so much in Puerto Rico!"

Al agreed to "Give it a try"...We decided to travel to Israel for the High Holidays."Every Jew, even  those who are not Religious, should visit Israel at least once!" I said "It is quiet an experience to see    how empty the streets ar, on the holiday of 'Yom Kipur': No cars, no buses, not even motorcycles, or bicycles! Most of the people are in the Synagogue and those who are not, stay home: The city seems deserted!" After resisting Al Finally agreed to go to Israel for a visit...I haven't seen my friends and       extended family for Three Years and couldn't wait for them, to meet my husband and daughter... I       was  busy buying gifts for my extended family and my friends children... I also promised Eli and   Yedida, our new "Chosen Family" in Puerto Rico, to visit their families in Jerusalem and give them      and their kids, the gifts they asked us to deliver, which were now packed in our four big Suit Cases...

After spending several days with Al's family and friends in N.J; we arrived at Kennedy Airport with  our four large, bulging suitcases... Before boarding the Israeli plain EL AL, we had to go through rigorous security check up ... Our luggage was opened by Israeli young men (wearing gloves) who looked at us and our luggage 'Suspiciously'... They also asked many questions: "Did you pack it by yourselves? Did anyone give you anything to carry for them? Did you leave the suitcases unattended at any time, even for just a few moments?" I could tell that Al was getting nervous...X"Why are you asking all these questions?" He said, X"Is something wrong?" He was patiently told that they must be very careful about Terrorists, who may put an 'Explosive device' in our luggage..."We are asking these questions sir, to prevent the repeat of such previous attempts, please forgive us for the inconvenience!" "Oh No! Please don't stop, take your time! I don't want any explosive devices, traveling with us to Israel, especially not on my first trip to the Holy Land with my Pregnant Wife!" Al said, making the security people laugh and pat him hard on the shoulder...  However, I could tell that he was still quiet nervous...

We finally boarded the plain and settled down in our seats, surrounded by loud and friendly Israeli, who were going back home... Upon hearing that this was Al's first trip to Israel, they began to give him advice about the best sights to visit in Israel and how we "Shouldn't miss 'such and such' place" and were urging Al to settle down in Israel for good! X"We need young families in our country!" They said, looking  at my belly and clapping Al (rather hard) on his shoulder... They gave him their phone number and made us promise to come for a visit  them at their home! X"We'll Put something on the fire!" (BBQ) they said.    The plane took off and Al and I were ready for the long flight to Israel: "The Land of Milk and Honey!"     I was at the end of my fifth month of pregnancy...

♪ "Love and Marriage, go together like a Horse and Carriage" ♪. V, Fix... Blue and photos below OOV

Hello everyone,

My parents and brother Rami, arrived from Israel for our wedding two weeks before, The weather was "Freezing Cold"! My Israeli friend Zeav, invited them, as well as Eli and Yedida, to stay in his spacious apartment in N.Y, while he moved to the hospital, were he worked as a doctor...The first thing the five of them did, was to buy warmer coats, gloves and scarves, before embarking on several"Sight Seeing tours" visiting the famous places, they all heard about: The Empire State Building, Radio City, China Town and other Tourists destinations... Lewis, Al's older brother offered to take my father, Rami and Elli, to rent tuxedos; which in Israel one could only see only in the movies...

When I was a child, the weddings in Israel were rather simple... People would be standing outside        the synagogue, or the wedding place; holding candles and waiting for the bride and groom to show up Four men (usually family members) were holding the poles of the 'Chupa' ( Marriage Canopy) as the Rabbi, was performing the ceremony... After the final blessings the Groom would crush an empty wine glass with his shoe: " In order to remember the Destruction of the old Temple in Jerusalem". The guests would yell: "Mazel Tov!" (Good Luck) and shove each other, in order to lift up the 'Newly weds', who were sitting on two chairs and begin dancing with them...    1 Photo below. X

Dinner was waiting on two long tables, across the wall: It was Self Served... There was a variety of   food and bottles of orange and grapefruit juice, soda water, sweet black beer, regular beer and the mild Israeli wine... Men, with 'Open shirts' (no ties) were loudly greeting friends and relatives, they haven't seen for awhile. Women would be exchanging 'Loud News', with those who sat on the opposite side of   the room and mothers, were frantically, looking for their shirking children; who were chasing each other were  running all over the room or hide under the tables... Eventually the music started  and every one ran to the dance floor for the traditional Israeli dance; The 'Hora'...

Our wedding took place at the exclusive Alpine Country Club, in New Jersey and was 'quiet different' from those I remember during my childhood in Israel....The gold engraved invitations   The invitation asked for 'Black Tie' (which was not known in Israel) Al's brothers, Lewis and Steve took my father and brother to rent tuxedos (which Israelis have seen only in the movies) A day before the big event, the Deitsch and Cohen families, had "Rehearsals", in order to be more familiar with the protocol of the wedding, on the following day. We were told that Al and I would meet with the rabbi in order to sign documents and later on with the photographer, in order to take formal photos of the bride, groom and all their family members... According to tradition, the two mothers would 'help' cover the bride's face with a veil and lead her to the flower decorated Marriage Canopy and her future husband, to get married

The family members, had to learn how to walk with measured steps, in tune with the music, towards the wedding canopy, which was situated at the middle of the room... My brother Rami, with my mother on his arm, would be the first to walk... Next would be Al's parents, followed by his brothers Lewis and Steven My father and I would be the last to walk towards Al, who would be waiting at the end of the Isle and lead me to the "Chupa"; where the wedding ceremony would take place... For my parents, Rami and myself, it was all new... We we were careful not to make eye contact during the rehearsal, fearing we may begin  to laugh out of control, as we often did after listening to a funny joke, or be in a ridiculous situation...

Tasting...
I can not remember too many details from the wedding, besides my  worry that my family (including myself) forget to count the steps to    the "Chupa", stumble and ruin the solemnity of the moment...  I was trying to suppress my laughter when my dad "handed me over" to Al and said to him with a comical sigh of relief: "Thank you Al and Good Luck!I recall the photographer instructing us to feed each other with a  slice of the Huge 'Wedding Cake' and was snapping photos. He also asked us to stand behind the tables of our guests and family members and was taking more photos of us and some of the gusts, who were happily clapping hands, singing and dancing at the center of the room....

Dancing the Hora
First dance
It seemed that whenever I was turning my head, this 'Annoying Photographer' was there with his camera...After our first formal    dance as a married couple, I found myself dancing with some of my new 'family members: Brother-in-law, uncles and Cousins as  well as with our friends an other 'strangers'... Al and I were swept by my enthusiastic Israeli friends, to dance the traditional Israeli  dance the"Hora" and were congratulating me for my choice of a husband: "Al is realy a great guy, just like a regular Israeli!" They told me...  When I was finally able to see my mom alone, for a moment, she was looking at her watch and say:"I wish this evening will never come to an end!" My father and brother, were complaining that their Neckties were choking them; asking if they could take it off...As the evening was coming to an end, my friend Yedida came over and asked me what do I wish for now, that I was a married woman.."All I want  right now Yedida, is to take of this dress and go go to sleep" I answered...

Central Park
Al and I spent our 'Wedding Night' at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan The next morning, we took a 'Romantic Ride' through Central Park, in one of the decorated carriages, hitched to a well-groomed horse... Two days later we flew back to Puerto Rico... Eli and Yedida insisted that my parents and brother stay at their home, rather then be by themselves in Al's Condo and were showing them the 'High Lights' of Puerto Rico while Al and I were be going on a One Week Honeymoon, on a cruise ship, around the Caribbean Islands...

Wife
Husband
Three months later, when I went to see a new doctor for a routine check up, I was answering several questions in the questioner... One of them was:"Your closest relative". My hand, which was holding the pen, froze in mid air... "Oh my God!" I was thinking, "I can't believe it... Al is my Closest Relative now!" So it seemed that the 'Real experience of Bonding' with my husband, which should have taken place as we stood under the wedding canopy; hit me for the first time, in San Juan, Puerto Rico; in the small waiting room of a doctor I have never seen before... I couldn't wait to come back home and tell my new husband: "Guess what Albie! You are now my Closest Relative! Can you believe it?"
